Chamber Business Bites: Storyteller's Museum

  • Storyteller's Museum and Hideaway Farm 9347 Old Highway 46 Lyles, TN, 37098 United States (map)

In the 1960s, a small general store nestled next to the railroad tracks was bought by independent record producer Red Wortham. The building was used as a recording studio for the next 10 years until Red sold it to Johnny Cash. In 1973, several young musicians that Cash knew were looking for ways to gain performing experience, including Cash's Song Catalogue Manager, songwriter Loney Hutchins. He proposed turning the rough little building into a music venue, and Cash gave his full support, financing the project. What had once been a little rough outpost in the middle of nowhere, had now become The Little Stage.

In the mid 1980s, Johnny sold the Little Stage back to Red Wortham, who converted the building into his studio Sur-Speed. He owned the building until his death, at which point, the building was once again abandoned.

When Storytellers Hideaway Farm owners purchased the building in 2016, it was months from collapse.

Within a year, the building was restored to its architectural beauty, and now the heart of Cash's song Saturday Night in Hickman County is coming back to life, with a twist. The Storytellers opened for country music fans from around the world and regularly has concerts and songwriter nights open to the public.

During our visit, we’ll tour the venue, and enjoy their Christmas Market. The evening will wrap up with live music by Billy Droze, and dinner catered by Lew's Colorado Chile Kitchen.
