The Duck River

Not only is the Duck River the longest flowing river in the State of Tennessee but it is also one of the states most scenic waterways which flows through Hickman County Tennessee.  But there's more here than just an ordinary river. In a feature article in the February 2010 issue of the National Geographic magazine, the Duck River was identified as one of 4 of the of the most biodiverse places in the world comparing it Table Mountain in South Africa, a cloud forest in Costa Rica and a Pacific Ocean coral reef in French Polynesia.  According to researchers the Duck River is home to over 50 species of freshwater mussels, 151 species of fish as well as 22 aquatic snail species making it the most biologically diverse river in North America.

Why is the Duck River so special you ask? According to Leslie Colley, director of the Nature Conservancy's Duck River Program, "It is largely un-impounded (by dams) so it has natural flows with the shallow shoals and (deeper) runs that mussels and many fish depend on. "It's just a system that is ancient, and it's one of the last remnants of our great Southern rivers," Ms. Colley said.

With it's abundance of natural resources and scenic beauty, Hickman County is one of Tennessee's best kept secrets.
